Camel Rides in Merzouga
Ride through the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi at sunset or sunrise, the timeless way to experience the Sahara.
The classic way to discover the Sahara
For centuries, camels were the only way to cross the desert. Today, camel trekking in Merzouga is still the most beautiful way to enter the dunes.
A camel ride in Merzouga takes you away from the village and into the silence of Erg Chebbi. The pace is slow and steady, the dunes rise and fall around you, and the only sounds are the wind and the soft steps of the camels. It is calm, memorable and suitable for most travellers, with no previous experience needed.
Our camel guides are local people who know these dunes well. They lead each camel on foot, choose the safest and most scenic route, and are happy to stop for photos along the way.

Sunset and sunrise camel experiences

Sunset ride
Most guests ride to camp in the late afternoon. As the sun goes down, the dunes change colour from gold to deep orange and red, and long shadows stretch across the sand. You arrive at camp in time for tea and dinner.

Sunrise ride
Early risers can ride or walk to a high dune to watch the sun appear over the Sahara. The air is fresh and still, and the first light on the sand is something you will not forget.
Included with every stay
A camel ride is part of every overnight stay at Merzouga Dunes Luxury Camps, together with your private tent, dinner and breakfast.
Would you like a longer camel trek or a private ride just for your group? Ask us and we will tell you what is possible for your dates.

Camel ride questions
Do I need riding experience?
No. The camels walk slowly and are led on foot by our guides. You simply sit and enjoy the views. The guides help you get on and off.
Is the camel ride suitable for children?
Many families ride together. Children usually ride with a parent or on a calm camel led by a guide. Let us know the ages of your children and we will advise you.
What if I prefer not to ride a camel?
No problem. Tell us when you book and we will arrange another way to reach the camp.
What happens to my luggage?
Bring a small overnight bag for the ride. Larger luggage can usually stay at the meeting point or be transported separately. We will explain the details when we confirm your stay.
